GMAT Scores: Student’s Top 10 Questions Answered

1. What is the average GMAT total score?
Although the GMAT has four total sections, your total score is only based on two: Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning. The total score range is between 200-800, with the average test taker scoring around 560 points.
2. What score do I need to get into my target business school(s)?
This answer depends on the school of choice, and it is best to reference the previous year’s admission score range to get a ballpark idea of the university’s expectations. Most business schools consider a score of 700+ “great” and 650+ “good”; while the top 10 MBA programs require 720+ points to wow them! Check our GMAT score chart!
3. How long after the exam do I get my scores?
If you are taking it online, you will see your unofficial GMAT scores immediately after the test is closed. The official score will be available to view online within 7 business days or in-person by mail within 20 calendar days.
4. How long are my scores valid?
Your scores will be held in the database for 5 years. You are able to use and access them anytime within this time limit.
5. Can I access score reports after 5 years?
The short answer is yes, for a fee. It is not advised to send out score reports older than five years, and most business schools will not accept reports this old. After 10 years, your score will be unavailable.
6. I don’t like my GMAT score. Can I cancel it?
Yes, it is possible to cancel any parts of your GMAT score that you are not pleased with. If you took the test at a test center, you may cancel for free if you do so immediately after the exam. If you opted for the online GMAT testing, you may cancel within 72 hours- but all cancellations online will incur a fee of $25.
7. I canceled my scores, but I changed my mind. Can I reinstate them?
No worries here! Reach out to a customer service representative by telephone or online with your MBA.com credentials to reinstate the scores for a fee of $50. If you reinstated the scores via phone call, expect an additional $10 fee for processing.
8. Is it possible to request a rescore?
On the Analytical Writing Assessment, you can request another essay grader to revisit your scoring. This will come with a fee of $45. The other sections do not allow resourcing and the Verbal/Quantitative sections have a computer adaptive grading system.
9. What if I take the GMAT more than once?
Every time you sit for the GMAT, your score will be recorded unless you cancel it. When you request an Official Score Report, all the GMAT attempts will be listed excluding the canceled sections/tests. Rest assured, your schools will only see the information you approved to be sent out.
10. Is it possible to get a perfect score?
Of course, it is possible, but out of 200,000 students who take the exam every year, only 30 are able to score a perfect 800 GMAT score. Half of this statistic may not be students, as quality assurance experts routinely take the exam to keep up with current test preparation materials.
